Another school year has started, and we again find the streets busy with school buses, children walking to bus stops and to school, parents dropping their children at school and people going to work. It is ever more important to stay alert and be cautious so we do not have a tragedy like we hear about on the news in our own community.
Everyone knows how easily we can become distracted by the hustle of the day, and technology is constantly vying for our attention. Nothing is so vitally important as getting to your destination safety without incident.
School Zones
We are all familiar the requirements in school zones. Please take the time to slow to the required 15 MPH in the school zones, and pay attention to the crosswalks. It only takes a few moments out of your day to slow the appropriate speed and when necessary, stop to allow people to cross.
All too frequently we hear horror stories of children struck in school zones or near bus stops. Children to not always judge the distance and speeds of approaching vehicles accurately and can easily be struck by oncoming traffic.
Slow down. Watch the crosswalks. Be prepared to stop.
School Buses and Bus Stops
We understand waiting behind a school bus can be frustrating especially if you’re running late. But the extra few minutes wait could potentially save a life and that precious life is worth every second.
Please keep alert and give the buses plenty of extra room espcially when they turn their warning lights on. Please do not attempt to speed around a bus even with their yellow warning lights on. Children getting on an off the buses can be unpredicatable and dart across a road, could drop something and bolt back to pick it up not realizing the danger they could be in if a driver is not paying attention.
The members of Fairview Lake Shore Fire Department ask that you slow down, stay alert and help us keep our kids safe.
